When the house stops keeping up
Air conditioning almost never fails on a mild day. The usual story in Cullman is a system that has been losing ground for a week, running longer and cooling less, until one hot afternoon finishes it. A frozen evaporator coil, a dirty or restricted airflow path, a low charge from a slow leak: each looks the same from the thermostat and is a different repair underneath.
The other classic is the Saturday failure. A capacitor that has been weakening for a season finally lets go, or a contactor sticks, and the outdoor unit hums without ever starting. Those are small parts, and they are cheap next to what happens if a compressor is made to keep trying against them.

Spring check, then twelve to fifteen years
A cooling system generally lasts 12 to 15 years, and the difference between the short end and the long end is mostly whether anyone looked at it in spring. A documented check before summer catches a worn capacitor, a dirty coil or a drain line on its way to clogging, while the schedule is still open and the weather is still forgiving.
Extended warranties are available on new installations, and customers on a maintenance agreement get 10% off parts. Service calls are not free; they are charged by service area, and the office will quote the charge for your address when you phone.
